Apple is reportedly working on its own satellite network. The network is said to be ready in time when the company launches the iPhone 14 series. However, the combination is not intended for full-fledged GSM-independent communication.

According to the generally reliable Bloomberg, the network is intended to send short texts to emergency contacts or call emergency services if the user is out of conventional coverage. The Apple Watch Series 8 would also be equipped with this option. Initially, the iPhone 13 could already exploit these possibilities, but that has been delayed.

Apple has partnered with Globalstar, a company that offers search via satellites in low Earth orbit. GlobalStar does not have worldwide coverage. The satellites cover most of North America, Europe, South America, Asia and Australia, among others. Satellite communication over band n53 is part of the 5G standard. This is the frequency domain in the 2.4 GHz band. No license is required for this. WiFi and Bluetooth are also found in the same frequency band.
