Drinking coffee or tea at the wrong time can cause iron deficiency. The Australian publication Better Health states that these two drinks may inhibit iron absorption.

For people who may be prone to developing anemia, experts do not recommend consuming foods and beverages such as bran, coffee and tea. The fact is that in tea, coffee and wine there are special substances that inhibit the absorption of iron and remove it from the body.

Additionally, phytates and fiber found in whole grains can reduce the absorption of iron and other minerals.

In a study also published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, scientists found that a cup of coffee reduces the absorption of iron from a hamburger by 39 percent and a cup of tea by 64 percent. At the same time, iron is absorbed more slowly if people drink coffee within an hour of eating.

However, caffeinated beverages usually do not cause iron deficiency in healthy people who are not prone to anemia.
