LG confirmed today (14) New tests with 6G terahertz (THz) technology can send and receive data at distances up to 320 meters. The mobile network standard is the successor to 5G, but its debut is expected to take several years.

According to the South Korean brand, the experiments were conducted in an open-air environment last Wednesday (7) at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) in Berlin, Germany. Sending and receiving data was stable in the frequency range of 155 to 175 GHz.

According to the company, this achievement represents a major advance towards the adoption of 6G THz networks in urban areas, as the base stations have a reference cellular coverage of approximately 250 meters. It’s also a significant improvement over the 2021 tests, where the transmissions reached a distance of 100 meters outdoors.

“With the success of our latest demo, we are one step closer to achieving 6G speeds of 1TB per second in indoor and outdoor urban areas,” said LG Vice President Kim Byoung-hoon. He also confirmed that further testing will be done with research institutes and companies in the industry to develop the technology.

First planned for 2029

Leveraging ultra-wideband frequencies, 6G has a relatively short range and may suffer from transmission to reception losses. To overcome these problems, the company and its partners developed a 20 dBm power amplifier, an increase of more than 5 dBm compared to last year.

A low-noise receiver amplifier was also adopted in this last experiment, which minimizes interference in signal reception. Improvements were necessary to achieve results superior to those recorded in the final test.

According to LG, discussions on the standardization of 6G should start around 2025, but the new technology shouldn’t start reaching the public until 2029. The expectation of the industry is that the sixth generation mobile internet will offer 10 times faster speed than 5G and reduce it further. provides latency and greater reliability.
