Russia has imported nearly $9.4 billion worth of goods through parallel imports since May and $3.1 billion in August. By the end of 2022, imports worth at least $20 billion are expected. Previously, the authorities estimated free imports at 16-18 billion dollars, based on the amount of $2-2.5 billion per month.
The extension of the scheme after 2023 will depend on the supply of foreign copyright holders and the ability of the Russian manufacturer to replace them, Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov told Izvestia.
According to the official, foreign companies that have left Russia and suspended from Russia are interested in resuming activities in the future.
In July, Manturov called parallel imports a “temporary solution” and allowed the scheme to be cancelled. This will happen as domestic products appear on the Russian market to replace imported ones.
The State Duma legalized the parallel import scheme on June 21. Under this scheme, many products are sold in Russia, including Apple MacBook and Lego. Samsung’s plant in the Kaluga region has been working on parallel imports since July 1. On June 23, news broke that Ozon began selling imported goods through parallel imports.
