Cloudflare announced this week Zero Trust SIM, a secure version of the eSIM for iOS and Android.

It can work both separately and together with VPN Cloudflare WARP. Protection is found “at the cellular level,” as noted by Cloudflare CTO John Graham-Cumming, who found no such solutions. At the start, the novelty will be available in the US, and eventually in other countries.

Zero Trust SIM uses defense in depth. A VPN is out of the question, but doesn’t eliminate the need to still run cellular on all mobile devices, and by controlling VPN usage, AnyConnect does nothing to prevent attacks from being detected while they’re on VPNs.

We remain sensitive to security issues in our applications and networks.

— Graham Cumming

This eSIM allows Cloudflare to rewrite DNS requests and use Cloudflare Gateway for DNS filtering instead. For data transfer security, it also includes each host and IP address before it accesses the internet. [TechCrunch]
