When asked about Microsoft’s role in identifying misinformation, Smith said, “I don’t think people want governments to tell them what is right and wrong.” “And I don’t think they’re really interested in having tech companies tell them that.”
Smith said Microsoft wanted to provide the public with more information about who said what, and let them decide for themselves whether the content is accurate.
“We have to be very careful and careful because – and that goes for any democratic government – basically people quite rightly want to make their own decisions, and they should,” he said. “Our whole approach should be to give people more information, not less, and we can’t stumble and use what others might see as a tactic of censorship.”
