Atlas V’s first stage is powered by an RD-180 liquid propellant rocket engine developed by Russian NPO Energomash. Satellites are placed in orbit to provide a television signal to the United States.
As noted, the Atlas V rocket was developed by the American military company Lockheed Martin. It is part of the Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle expendable launch vehicle development program, designed to launch US Air Force satellites alongside specialty commercial vehicles.
