The European parliament approved the final version of its requests for the European Commission’s proposal right to repair In other words: a document with the final position of the meeting, which will be part of the next negotiations with the Commission and the Council.

The position was adopted with 509 votes in favour, 3 against and 13 abstentions. MEPs have, among other things, called for the final version of the proposal to oblige manufacturers to make smartphones and other devices so that they last longer, and they also called on manufacturers to incentivize consumers tomake repairs easier regarding replacement.

For example, we talk about extend the warrantyor to provide a replacement device – a bit like cars – when the product is sent in for service.

The European Parliament asks for even more transparency about the estimated lifespan of each product and the years of guaranteed software updates after purchase.

Added to this is the reversibility of updates In other words, if the new version of the operating system is poorly optimized and doesn’t work well on an older smartphone – degrading performance – the user should be able to easily and immediately revert to the previous version.

The document also asks that the commission consider imposing severe sanctions on the so-called planned obsolescenceattributable to the bed of unfair commercial practices.

We repeat, these are simply the requests of the European Parliament, which does not have the power to take legislative initiative. These proposals will then be discussed with the other two institutions participating in the European legislative process, namely the Council and the Commission – the only one of the three with a right of initiative. The game is still very long.
