Although a great feature, the initial version of DirectStorage only improved loading in consumer games on PCs with NVMe storage. In this case, the data is sent to the CPU for compression and then reaches the computer’s GPU.

Soon, DirectStorage 1.1 will no longer decompress via the CPU and will decompress using the graphics card itself. Because GPUs are optimized to perform parallel operations, the innovation should dramatically increase speeds across different PCs.

DirectStorage Update

To promote the innovation, Microsoft released an image showing GPU decompression compared to CPU decompression. In addition to the time reduced from 2.36 seconds to 0.8 seconds with the GPU, CPU usage dropped from 100% to 15.08%.

It is important to note that the update will work on all graphics cards that support Shader Model 6.0 and will work even better on it. Computers with DirectX12 Ultimate. For now, no release date estimates have been announced, but Microsoft has DirectStorage 1.1 will work normally on Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems.
