Unlike conventional vibrating diaphragm speakers, their thin-film counterparts generate sound through current selection and electromagnetic fields.

Scientists using piezoelectric materials have been able to capture thin-film speakers that begin to vibrate when applied to a voltage. They already actively use some phones and TVs.

At first, the array faced a problem – in order for thin-film speakers to produce high-quality sound, it was necessary to separate them from other problems. MIT engineers managed to complete them, after which this problem was fixed.

In particular, instead of vibrating the entire surface of the membrane, a network of “bulging” domes was formed on it, vibrating independently of each other.

The speaker consists of three layers – a piezoelectric material with a thickness of 8 micrometers, placed between two layers of PET plastic, while holes appear on the upper layer, protrude slightly through the material, and the inner one performs a protective function and at the same time is the base with which the speaker is attached to hot cases.

The thickness of the speaker is only 120 microns. Its surface is “covered” with thousands of microscopic domes 15 microns high. To test their brainchild, they fixed it on the wall and installed a microphone 30 cm in front of it. The devices recorded a sound power of up to 66 dB at a voltage of 25 V at frequencies of 1 kHz and 86 dB 0 dB Dynamic’ dynamic.
