Materials scientists have developed advanced nanofilament textiles based on a phase change material that can store and release large amounts of heat when the material changes from liquid to solid. By combining the yarns with electrothermal and photothermal coatings that enhance the effect, they essentially developed a fabric that can both quickly cool the wearer and keep them warm as conditions change.

The researchers now aim to further improve the phase transition properties of tissue and develop practical applications for their material.

A paper with a detailed description of the manufacturing technology was published in the ACS Nano journal of the American Chemical Society.
