This icebreaker is the first to be built directly for the needs of the Russian Navy in 45 years. The maneuverability of “Ilya Muromets” is ensured due to the absence of a steering wheel and control of the ship with the help of propeller-steering columns.

This ship was launched at Admiralty Shipyards in April 2015. The ship was delivered to the Navy in 2017. In the future, four such ships should be built.

“The icebreaker has tremendous maneuverability. It is important: when moving, we can avoid unnecessary contact with ice and save the trunk when moving between polynyas. Any contact with ice is a hazard. The cruising ice thickness available to us is up to one meter in raids – up to one and a half meters, ”Osipov said.
