according to the information Wall Street Journaldating app grinder collected location data from its users and put it up for sale through its partner company UberMedia (UM). The worst part of this story is that the company has allegedly been running the action since at least 2017.

According to information revealed by a former employee of the company, Grindr did not believe that sharing users’ location data would pose a problem. In fact, executives believed that creating location-based ads was transforming the advertising industry.

Last year, a Catholic organization claims it purchased data to track usage and evict an employee from the church. Another possibility is that anti-LGBTQ+ governments are using the data to find and arrest app users.

Grindr’s Answer

“Grindr does not share the exact location of users, we do not share user profile information or even industry standard data such as age or gender,” the company said in a statement.

As an answer Wall Street Journal, the company revealed that it shares less data than most dating apps and other big tech companies. Already in response to the website EngadgetGrindr stated that it has improved its privacy policies since 2020, when the policies were updated.
