Since the beginning of spring, sales of DVD and Blu-ray discs have increased 2.2 times on the M.Video-Eldorado network compared to last year, RBC writes with reference to the company’s data.
In March, the largest Western film studios The Walt Disney, Warner Bros and Sony announced the termination of the rental of their releases in Russia in connection with the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine. This caused a significant drop in the box office of the country’s cinemas. In May, some chains were forced to close part of their theaters due to lower attendance.
M.Video-Eldorado said that demand for DVD and Blu-ray discs peaked in the second quarter. The Blu-ray format accounts for the largest share of physical movie sales.
The Ozon market confirmed that Russians began to order records more frequently. From March to September, users bought 16% more movie DVDs and 51% more music DVDs from March to September compared to the same period last year, according to the market.
Related to the shutdown of Western streaming services, revenue growth from domestic online cinemas showed the lowest figures in five years. Local companies are trying to rehabilitate the demand for Russian sites. In particular, Rostelecom applied to the Ministry of Digital Transformation for funds to create an ecosystem with music and games based on its Wink online cinema. Thus, the company expects to increase the number of subscribers from 3 million to 6 million by the end of 2023.
