According to the announcement in a thread on the foundation’s page, “times and situations have changed” since 2014, when Wikimedia allowed the offering of some cryptocurrencies as part of contributions following requests from contributors.

However, some communities have begun to pressure the group to no longer accept cryptocurrency donations – meaning that the foundation even indirectly encourages practices such as financial speculation and predatory and very expensive energy mining.
