The Central Bank did not expect that “friendly” countries would massively abandon the Mir payment system after the introduction of sanctions in the United States, reports Bloomberg.
Of the nine countries that supported Mir, they refused to use it six times. This comes two months after the US Treasury Department issued a sanctions warning in September.
Mir cards now work only in Belarus, Armenia and some banks in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
Now the Bank of Russia is trying to come up with a working alternative to Mir abroad.
Shops and hotels in some countries still unofficially accept Mir cards, but the lack of bank processing limits their attraction. [Bloomberg]
