Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease that causes joint pain and inflammation. Previous studies have found an association between smoking and an increased risk of rheumatoid arthritis, but there is less evidence linking the condition to exhaust fumes.

To examine this risk, the researchers used data from 4,033 people with the disease and 6,485 people without the disease. The team found that about three-quarters of patients with rheumatoid arthritis have been exposed to at least one type of dust or fume at work.
