The new Witcher: Origins series has been released on Netflix.
This is a prequel to the original series based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s universe. The year is rich in sequels, prequels, remakes and maybe. The authors are trying in every possible way to “leave” by combining franchises, but this is far from always a waste for them.
We have already reviewed the novelty and are in a hurry to share our impressions.
It’s more like a TV show
If in several two parts of The Witcher the authors at least found the concentration of the book canon, now they have decided to push it, as if, into the background.
What is the series about: The Origin promotion is valid 1200 years before the events of The Witcher. The plot is dedicated to the seventies warriors who unite to fight back the tyrant who captures the continent.
The emergence of the era of Conjunction of spheres, when misfortunes and witchers appeared in the world.
a series built on six episodes, but winning the novelty up to four episodes. And this can be seen even structurally, as if some moments from the life of the heroes were missed.
The story tells about the world of Elfkind, when there was no Conjugation of Spheres yet. Three warring clans of elves embrace power. It seems that this is very strange, it is even impossible to face the “game of thrones”, where “undercover” intrigues are thought out.
In the novelty, everything is very similar to the identification of a showdown at the level of “House-2”. You are more likely to follow their possible individual manifestations than the global plot. At the same time, of course, the main focus is on the exposition and lazily moves the plot forward.
Some of the main characters have their own motives and goals, but they are in no hurry to realize them. The main goal is to overthrow Mervyn, who has seized power over everyone. Greedy, bloodthirsty and mean woman.
And okay, if it was served clearly and understandably to everyone. In a little less than four hours, we SEVEN heroes. And this is logical, because everyone needs their own screen time.
It’s hard to say at all that this series is focused on the first witcher. Yes, this is the central theme of the entire season, but it is presented so raggedly that the overall picture of the state is not collected. And this is, by the way, the best part of the whole series. The fact that the authors were at least partially able to master.
The authors would naturally like to get an original story with lots of details. However, they failed in this task, pushing the plot forward quickly.
As a result, it turned out that we did not receive exactly those parts that were not received: how exactly the Conjugation of spheres happened, how the people of the world divided, how they interact with each other subsequently, how mutants were formed – there are no clear answers to these questions, only near-similar topics without a clear thought.
It is difficult to evaluate the picture in isolation from the general universe. If the animated “Nightmare of the Wolf” even met with Vesemir, who is closely associated with Geralt, then at present there are no common signs that could even partially hook fans.
But one of the central phenomena cannot be used to judge the series. Each of them is created clumsily and lazily. And at the end, you can’t empathize with anyone, because you simply don’t care about them.
The actors who played the main roles could not be found. Perhaps those two deleted episodes could have changed the situation, but in fact we had what we had.
The whole budget went to the picture
The image is hard to fault. It seems that in German and mass gathering.
Camera spans, unusual camera decisions, staging of action scenes (of which there are very few) are the basis of the entire season. At least we managed to convey something positive.
Visually fight scenes are better than in the original The Witcher. They are spectacular, juicy and colorful. But this turns out to be catastrophically small.
The sound design is fully consistent with the fantasy genre. There is nothing outstanding in it, but it is set with the task of achieving the most unusual and unique moments of discovery, smoothing out the corners in “tedious” dialogues and locations. One can even note the central musical themes, but they are still far from Dandelion’s song “To the Witcher for a Coin”.
A movie that’s not worth wasting your time on.
Let it be almost four hours of running time, but they are not worth watching the series at all.
You can use beautiful landscapes, look at the expressiveness of the battle scenes. And that is all. it’s really easier to find out by opening a cut on YouTube, and you will already see everything. The picture does not bring any value, it does not play on your emotions, does not intrigue and practically does not try to achieve at least something.
This series was filmed purely for the money for a well-known franchise. No more. Don’t look, you have nothing to lose.
