The hint was the development of half a century ago by a team of NASA specialists led by physicist Jeralo O’d. Then they proposed to create habitable space stations in the form of two counter-rotating cylinders (O’Neill cylinders) connected by a common axis. The speed of their occurrence has become natural both for the creation of artificial nature and for the comfortable natural living of the inhabitants of space cities.

The Rochester researchers augmented the development of their sensors by prearranging the creation of these cylinders from asteroid debris, spanning our solar system. Their main advantage is the conditions of high reliability from cosmic radiation, the disadvantage is low stability, which in gravitation may seem like their scattering into small fragments.

To keep the rock from flying apart, project leader Peter Miklavich and his colleagues proposed placing it in mesh bags made of ultra-light and high-strength carbon nanofibers. According to the observation plan, as the bag reaches a large size, under the influence of natural nature, the nanofibers are stretched, fragments quickly spread out, from which a sufficiently thick and durable layer is gradually formed, capable of radiation from everyone inside the cylinder. Thus, it will be possible to gradually reduce the surface area of ​​about 57 square meters. km.
