The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), the main EU regulator in this area, has fined the US corporation Meta* 390 million euros for violating privacy regulations on its social networks Facebook and Instagram**.
According to a statement from the department, the complaint against Facebook was filed from Austria and against Instagram from Belgium. Both appeals were received by the DPC on May 25, 2018, the day the General Data Protection Regulation (RGPD) came into force.
The company received a fine of 210 million euros for breaching the GDPR in the first social network and a fine of 180 million euros for violations in the second.
It is clarified that the American corporation was also instructed to adapt its data processing operations to the requirements within three months. According to the statement, both platforms should review their legal approach to advertising based on EU law.
Reuters notes that the total amount of fines imposed by the Irish regulator on the corporation now stands at 1.3 billion euros. The DPC continues to deal with 11 more cases related to violations of Meta services in the field of data protection.
