Twitter plans to ease its ban on political ads on the social network. The ability to post such ads will be available “in the coming weeks,” the company said in a statement.

Political ads will return to Twitter

“Going forward, we will align our advertising policies with those of television and other media. As with any change to our policies, we will first make sure that our approach to reviewing and approving content protects people on Twitter,” the platform’s security team said in a statement.

The company added that it is also relaxing the rules in the US on ads related to social equality and environmental change.

Twitter did not say what specific conditions would change. However, the social network’s advertising policy page clarifies that political advertising must be geo-restricted.

The social network banned the placement of political ads in 2019. Jack Dorsey, who was then the company’s chief executive, said at the time that “coverage of political content should be earned, not bought.”

After the arrival of Elon Musk to the position of head of Twitter and the reduction of half of the company’s staff, the big advertisers began to reject massively from the social network. The platform’s CEO even had to meet personally with Tim Cook to convince Apple to come back.
