Russian mobile operator MTS has warned some subscribers about the rate increase starting January 17. At the same time, the content of all tariffs remains unchanged.
The company decided to reduce the individual discount on the “Personal” rate. The adjustment will affect a small number of users. The cost will change due to difficulties with the equipment, Vedomosti writes.
“Modern communication networks “are mainly based on foreign equipment”, the supply of which to Russia is now “very difficult to organize”, which is why maintenance costs have increased. The price change is a necessary measure that will allow us to maintain all the communication options that you are used to,” MTS explained.
In July 2022, the Russian authorities denied direct financial assistance to cell phone companies. The operators had a preferential income tax rate, a moratorium on contributions to the universal service reserve, and soft loans.
Support measures that have not been approved:
- preferential income tax rate of 3% until the end of 2024;
- a moratorium on contributions from telecommunications operators to the universal service reserve, which finances a project to close the digital divide in the regions;
- concessional loans at a rate of no more than 3% for the purchase of telecommunications equipment, replacement of working capital and support for communications infrastructure.
