Third-party Twitter clients stopped working this week. The company did not comment on the disabling of programs in any way, after which one of the platform’s engineers wrote to Slack that “the suspension of third-party applications is intentional.”
According to The Information, Twitter employees discussed in internal correspondence when the company will officially announce the decision to disable third-party clients.
The social media engineer who wrote about the deliberate shutdown declined to answer questions from reporters.
In addition, the publication reports that Twitter is working on “approved theses” on the situation of the partners, but it is not yet known when they will be ready. Users suggested that the reason for disabling the app is the fact that they do not display ads and therefore do not generate revenue.
On the morning of January 13, Moscow time, messages began to appear about the closure of applications running on the API of the social network, such as Tweetbot, Twitterrific, Talon and others. Tweetbot co-founder Paul Haddad wrote on his Mastodon that he received “no official or unofficial information” from Twitter about the incident.
