The artists allege that these organizations are violating the rights of “millions of artists” by training their artificial intelligence tools on five billion images taken from the internet “without the permission of the authors”.
A lawyer representing the plaintiffs says the AI models’ ability to “fill the market with an almost unlimited number of infringing images will cause irreversible harm to artists.”
Experts believe the question of whether these systems violate copyright law is complex and should be resolved in the courts.
