Neural networks are pacing the planet at an alarming rate. What was impossible a year ago on a home and technology budget, is now available for free. Now another task that took a lot of effort and time turned into a case for 10 seconds.
So the situation. You need to transcribe in the text 4 hours of the teacher’s lecture, a recording of a conversation or an interview. Reprinting the old fashioned way – you will go crazy.
Instead, open the MacWhisper application, drop the audio file there, and after 10 seconds, a complete decryption is observed. Summed up almost 50 (!) languages, including Russian. Internet NOT NEEDED. The application is absolutely free.
I tested it on several lectures from YouTube. Impressed and recommend to everyone.
What is Mac Whisper
MacWhisper is a free Mac app. You select a language, drag and drop a file and a universal transcript in two formats: with and without timecodes, solid text.
Everything. No “buts” or other restrictions. The program works completely offline and does not “climb” into the Internet (except for the sake of updating). The list of required languages contains almost all references in the world.
How it works? MacWhisper uses OpenAI Whisper launched in late 2022. Today it is the fastest and most advanced neural network for transcoding audio to text. She was trained in English and then scaled up to support others, including Russian.
The free version of MacWhisper uses a scaled-down Whisper neuromodel Tiny for instant standard English transcription or model Base for all other languages. The paid Pro version is $9 and includes the Whisper model Large – accurate in the world in quality is preserved, but slower. It makes sense to buy a paid version only for those who constantly need existing programs and do not want to tolerate even small errors in the text.
The program is only 230 megabytes and requires macOS Ventura (13.0 and later). It does not work on older versions of the OS, alas. You can also find the OpenAI Whisper neural network itself on the Internet, and then use the recognizer on any OS through cloud services. It’s just not as convenient as it is done in MacWhisper: opened, threw the file, everything is ready.
