The UK’s National Health Service states that more than 8 million Britons took antidepressants in 2022. The most common among these are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. They increase the level of serotonin, which affects a person’s emotions, mood, and sleep.

Also, 40-60% of people taking antidepressants complain of emotional dullness. In other words, they can no longer experience joy and pleasure as before.

One study made it clear that drugs like escitalopram inhibit people’s ability to learn from the feedback they receive from their environment and actions. The drug also affected patients’ ability to respond to rewards.

It turns out that antidepressants work in a way that alleviates some of the emotional pain experienced by people with depression. Because of this, however, they also lose their ability to fully experience pleasure.
