In 11 experiments involving 6,500 people, the researchers found why veterans have lower employment and earnings levels than other people. Apparently, people often perceive warriors as more suitable for jobs that involve dedication and often lower pay.

The scientists concluded that a persistent belief that heroes must be selfless could drive veterans into lower-paying, service-oriented jobs.
