Age-related macular degeneration affects the human macula. The macula is part of the retina of the eye, thanks to which people can recognize faces, read newspapers and drive cars.

Due to diabetes, fluid accumulates in the macula. And about one in 15 people with this condition develops macular edema. Diseases such as toxoplasmosis, macular degeneration, and central serous chorioretinopathy can also affect the macula.

There are several types of macular disease. Therefore, treatment depends on the specific situation. However, you can do the following to avoid getting this disease and to protect your macula.

  1. Diet. Scientists from the US National Eye Institute have found that the Mediterranean diet is particularly helpful in this situation. It contains a lot of legumes, fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains. In this diet, fish is eaten instead of red meat.

  2. quit smoking. Smoking is known to be associated with a number of macular diseases, including macular edema, macular degeneration, and central serous chorioretinopathy.

  3. sun protection. A hat and sunglasses will help protect you from the sun’s rays. Sun exposure is known to be a risk factor for the development of macular degeneration.

  4. Dream. Quality sleep protects the macula, and this is scientifically proven.

  5. relief from stress. It is well known that stress increases the likelihood of developing central serous chorioretinopathy. Don’t forget to monitor your blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and inflammation levels in your body, too.
