As Google continues its race to make up for lost time in the short video format, it is feeling the pressure from apps like YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. At a recent investor conference, the company announced that Shorts has surpassed 50 billion daily views.

This is a significant achievement, especially given the growth of the platform. During the same period in 2022, YouTube Shorts reached 30 billion daily views, meaning that number nearly doubled at the beginning of the year. However, it is still far from the 140 billion daily views of Instagram Reels.

As part of its plan to feature Short Videos on YouTube, Google has also recently started monetizing short videos on the platform to encourage creators to work more with the format. The idea is to get more financial returns from numbers conquered by short videos.

YouTube will continue to promote Shorts content

Shorts generated $7.96 billion in revenue for Google in the last quarter of 2022. This figure represents an 8% drop from the same period in 2021, when short YouTube videos earned $8.63 billion despite fewer views.

In any case, Google representatives say they’re pleased with the progress at Shorts and the start of monetization plans. The company’s CFO, Ruth Porat, also stated that YouTube will continue to prioritize continued growth in engagement and monetization of YouTube Shorts.
