In 2022, many Russian companies had to adapt to new market conditions. More than 50% of top managers faced market uncertainty, adapted to the high speed of change, and learned to make decisions quickly. This is according to a study by Odgers Berndtson Russia, Skolkovo NextGen and the Skolkovo School of Management. RB.RU got acquainted with the results.

Companies named the main challenges for the next three years

The need to seek alternative services and technologies was also reflected in the work of 46% of the managers surveyed. 34% of executives cited declining customer demand and purchasing power as one of the top challenges in 2022.

Another 27% reported that due to the impossibility of making long-term forecasts, it is difficult for senior managers to make decisions about expanding production and investing in infrastructure.

CEOs, business owners, shareholders believe these challenges will continue to affect business for the next three years.

Other difficulties noted by respondents include:

  • problems with supply chains: the most tangible was the inability to buy Western equipment, spare parts, analyzers, for example, in medicine, etc.

  • personnel problems and competition for professionals, as well as employee burnout, staff flight, lack of IT specialists.

  • maintaining business profitability: operational efficiency, maintaining business continuity, the need for a new understandable business model.

  • search for new markets in other regions and countries.

To cope with the challenges, according to the respondents, first of all, a flexible organizational structure and a strong management team can help. For changes, the business needs skills that are not always present in the company at the right level: almost all respondents note a lack of skills.

To fill the missing skills, companies train their employees, hire specialists with the necessary skills, stimulate the exchange of experiences, etc.

In 2023, 44% of managers, despite the difficulties, expect a slight increase and a plateau. According to them, this year will require from above “a vision of the future and the ability to energize others, and their teams: collaboration, entrepreneurial thinking and flexibility”.

The sample is 41 senior managers of large companies operating in Russia, across industries: automotive business, investment and management companies, medicine, retail, e-commerce, finance, etc.
