Fossils date back 59.5 to 55.5 million years ago. The researchers estimated the weight of the two newly discovered species based on the size and density of their bones compared to modern penguins.
The team found that P. stonehousei weighed about 50 pounds, slightly more than an existing emperor penguin. K. fordeycei would have been three times heavier – about 155 kg.
Unfortunately, with no other data, the researchers were unable to estimate the body length of the new species.
