The report examined ongoing interactions with 10 accounts that were previously banned for “posting hateful content and dangerous conspiracies.”
To estimate the accounts’ reach, CCDH analyzed nearly 10,000 tweets over 47 days in December 2022 and January 2023.
CCDH created three new Twitter accounts to determine how much Twitter ad revenue they could generate. Of these, the Center subscribed to these 10 previously mentioned accounts. The authors of the study found that ads appear about one in every 6.7 tweets. Then, using data from analytics firm Brandwatch, which calculated that Twitter ads averaged $6.46 per 1,000 impressions, CCDH concluded that given the reach of these 10 accounts, the platform earned up to $19 million in ad impressions from those accounts.
