The laptop is not sold directly by its creators. This is a concept design that individuals or companies can use to create real versions of the device. The purpose of the Balthazar portable computer is to give users full control over how they use their computer. The authors of the project want to move away from the closed hardware architectures that many manufacturers use today.
The entire device is built from the ground up using open standards and is designed to be serviceable and upgradeable at a very low cost. The laptop also does not use Windows operating systems, it is designed to run entirely on Linux.
The device is quite large as it focuses more on functionality than form. The specifications include a custom SoC based on the RISC-V and ISA CPU architectures. This platform runs on a SoM (or System in a Module) board that is replaceable and upgradeable. RAM is also built into this board. It also uses a 13.3-inch Full HD display with 16:10 aspect ratio and LED backlighting, a battery with a capacity of more than 10,000 mAh, a removable camera module and an ergonomic keyboard.
Unfortunately, no deadline has yet been set for the design of the Balthazar laptop, but the team is already working on its first prototype.
