VK has estimated its investment in the development of the basic version of the domestic game engine at 1 billion rubles. Around 100 specialists are needed to create it.
“We will invest a billion to develop the basic version. We will involve about 100 specialists,” Vladimir Kiriyenko, general director of VK, told reporters. Later, he clarified that VK is allocating 1 billion rubles for the entire project, the rest of the amount is planned to be released through grants.
According to him, the company involves “the entire gaming community” in the creation. “From the point of view of development, Open Source (open source code – ed.) is used,” added the head of VK.
The creation of a game engine, according to plans, will take 3-5 years. In 2024, VK plans to present a beta version, in 2025 – a ready-made engine.
The company will focus on using the engine not only for game development, but for other tasks as well. Not only large companies, but also small developers will be able to use the product.
As previously reported, the VK game engine project will be financed with its own funds. The development is supposed to cost 2.8 billion rubles.
The need to create a national engine arose after the imposition of sanctions and the departure of foreign gambling corporations from the Russian Federation. VK then announced plans to create an analogue of the Steam and Epic Games platforms.
