Experts are confident that three types of meat will do more harm than good to a gout sufferer. In general, gout occurs when uric acid crystals build up in the joints, causing chronic inflammation and irritation. Patients suffer from symptoms such as severe pain, swelling or redness in the joints.

Senior Research Fellow Viva! Veronica Proshek Harvatova noted that the human body produces uric acid when purines are broken down. Most purines today red meat offal (kidneys, liver) fish (sardines, anchovies, tuna, trout, scallops, mussels).

According to Justin Butler, a diet high in purines can contribute to uric acid buildup and cause a gout attack. Pretty much the same thing is said in a meta-analysis published in the Asia-Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Although experts conclude that seafood, red meat, alcohol and fructose are associated with gout.
