Phone scammers started changing mobile numbers to international numbers. Most of the calls came from Japan, Korea, Kazakhstan, Turkey and Liechtenstein. Domestic operators consider this strategy the result of protecting domestic traffic.
Fraudsters began to use the numbers of small telecom operators more frequently – this is a “2023 trend” – as well as calls via instant messaging, Kommersant reported, referring to the MegaFon presentation.
Against the background of the reduction in the number of Russian numbers available for substitution, fraudsters should look for foreign sources with whom local operators have not yet established contacts to verify contacts, said Pavel Kovalenko, director of the Informzaschita anti-fraud center.
He believes that existing measures to combat intruders are as effective as technically possible, but a centralized system for checking and blocking fake numbers in Russia alone is not enough.
In December 2022, the Roskomnadzor Main Radio Frequency Center launched Antifraud, a unified phone call verification (EPVV) platform. The system is needed to combat phone scammers. Now MegaFon, MTS and VimpelCom are connected to the platform.
Although about 7.5 million gray SIM cards are distributed on the Russian market, as noted in Telecom Daily, the problem with calls from fake numbers will not be solved.
