It is often told how women are underrepresented in some fields. However, it turned out that a different trend was emerging in American science.
According to the authoritative journal Nature, around 40% of the new members of both prestigious academies since 2019 are female researchers. Historically, each academy has had significantly fewer female researchers than men. Until the 1980s, female members made up less than 10% of the total membership in all fields of science.
The proficiency of the scientists was compared according to the number of publications and citations. Even if these indicators were similar for a female researcher and a male researcher, the former turned out to be more likely to be selected as an academy member. The exact reason for this is not specified by the authors.
