A recent paper by scientists shows that the indigenous people of modern Ecuador adapted to the tuberculosis bacillus several thousand years before the arrival of Europeans.
This directly contradicts the theory that the disease did not exist in South America before the arrival of Europeans on the continent 500 years ago.
The indigenous peoples of Ecuador likely adapted to Mycobacterium tuberculosis 3,000 years before Europeans discovered their land, according to the study.
The researchers also found that the demographic collapse that coincided with the arrival of Europeans was more severe in Ecuador than in other parts of the Andes.
