Experts believe that coming under consumer electronics sanctions is a drastic tightening of restrictions in the tech sector. The measures may also affect parallel imports. The United States has the ability to initiate criminal prosecution for violating sanctions, so those who previously imported goods into the Russian Federation can avoid high risks.

Telecom Daily CEO Denis Kuskov said the ban on smartphone imports will primarily affect iPhone and Samsung. About a quarter of the market is for phones that cost more than $300. In addition, restrictions may apply to smartphones from Chinese manufacturers with 25% American components.

Infoline Analytics CEO Mikhail Burmistrov acknowledges that the new sanctions call into question the parallel import of Apple devices. “It’s one thing for an American company to officially stop deliveries to Russia on its own initiative, and it’s another thing if the delivery is banned by sanctions,” the expert said. The risks will also significantly increase the cost of equipment. Kuskov believes the sanctions will make deliveries more difficult, especially for small trade intermediaries. However, large retail chains may also refuse to sell Apple equipment due to the threat of secondary sanctions.
