Last month, Russia recorded an overall decrease in mobile Internet speeds by 7%, to 18.3 Mbps, Izvestia writes with reference to TelecomDaily data.

In February, the speed of mobile Internet in Russia decreased by 7% – Izvestia

The service report indicates that the slowdown did not affect Moscow, in the capital the Internet only accelerated by 32%, that is, up to 34.7 Mbps.

At TelecomDaily, the decrease in speed is explained by the fact that last spring Western companies stopped supplying network equipment to the Russian Federation. Another reason was that the operators are focused on installing their stations mainly in large cities with a potentially large coverage of users.

According to the CEO of TelecomDaily, Denis Kuskov, the slowdown of the Internet in large cities will not go unnoticed and could affect the operator’s reputation. At the same time, hardly anyone will pay attention to access issues in a small settlement.

“Network equipment becomes obsolete, wears out, requires constant modernization, and supplies are not unlimited,” Kuskov explains.

He added that the current situation creates conditions for the gap between the capital and the regions to increase in terms of speed of access to the network.

Mintsifra, however, does not see any problems with speed reduction. According to the agency, in the first nine months of last year, mobile Internet traffic in the country increased by 20%, to 25.8 billion GB.

The ministry said that among the four big individual operators in the country, traffic increased by 14% and in the capital by 18%. The Ministry of Digital Transformation added that operators optimized their networks during the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier in Russia, for the first time, a connection to the 5G network through a satellite channel was tested.
