A new study shows an increase in the percentage of images taken by Hubble that are distorted by satellites flying in the path of its lens. Data collected up to 2021 were also analyzed. Since then, SpaceX and other companies have launched thousands more satellites.

“Astronomy will suffer. There will be science that will cost much more. There will be things we will miss,” said astronomer Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

“Hubble” made revolutionary discoveries for its time: among them, evidence of a supermassive black hole at the center of most galaxies, which helped calculate the age of the Universe (13.8 billion years).
