The functionality is based on the same technology as in the AR Translate tool for Google Lens. This is how it works: users upload photos or screenshots from their computers and get translations into 133 languages. At the same time, 113 source languages are automatically determined.
The new Images tab in Google Translate also gives you the option to copy text, upload a translated image, or clean it up.
Note that AR Translate for Google Lens has been allowing you to translate images on mobile devices for several years now. It is based on the same productive competitor network (GAN) as the Magic Eraser feature introduced on the Pixel 6.
