A study published in the journal Cell Metabolism showed that administration of FGF21 to intoxicated mice resulted in rapid improvement of consciousness, motor skills, and motor coordination.
Interestingly, experiments also showed that this hormone is specific to ethanol and does not affect recovery after administration of other psychoactive drugs that impair consciousness and coordination.
According to the scientists, the new discovery could have potential therapeutic applications for treating alcohol poisoning in humans. True, further studies, including in humans, are needed to determine its effectiveness and safety.
