NASA says that while this is an above-average level of risk, the probability of a collision is still “very low.”

The asteroid was first discovered on February 27. The structure, called 2023 DW, is estimated to be about 50 meters in diameter. The asteroid is expected to make its closest approach to Earth on February 14, 2046.

“Often when new objects are discovered for the first time, it takes several weeks of observations to reduce uncertainty and adequately predict their orbits for years to come,” NASA said. Experts will continue to update the estimates as new data comes in.

It is noted that a direct collision with such an asteroid should not be catastrophic. However, if the 2023 DW falls near a major city or densely populated area, it can still cause serious damage.
