These new knotty materials may find applications in both biomedical and aerospace applications due to their strength, possible biocompatibility and extreme deformability.
Each knot is approximately 70 micrometers high and wide, and each fiber has a radius of approximately 1.7 micrometers (about one hundredth of the radius of a human hair).
The knots were not tied but were made in a knotted state using advanced 3D lithography. The team plans to explore materials created from more complex knots in the future.
