The tug already has an electric propulsion system. Amogy will install a 1 MW ammonia generator on the tug.

For this project, the company will use a cracking reactor to split ammonia into hydrogen and nitrogen, and then run the hydrogen through a fuel cell to generate electricity and power electric motors.

Ammonia produced using hydrogen is a promising clean fuel for industries where reducing carbon emissions seems difficult or even unattainable at worst. Among such sectors, shipping stands out, where large amounts of energy are required, batteries are very heavy and bulky, and gas or cryogenic liquid hydrogen is very difficult to transport.
