Researchers have created a new time-dependent model of the composition of Venus’ atmosphere. They used a unique approach: first they assumed that there was once an ocean on the planet, and then they “initiated” time.

The model showed that hypothetical habitable periods on Venus should have ended 3 billion years ago, with the maximum ocean depth on its entire surface being 300 meters. The results show that more than 70% of the planet’s history has been uninhabited for four times longer than some previous estimates.
