According to scientists, permafrost, the frozen soil layer, continues to melt due to global warming, which may cause viruses that have been dormant for thousands of years to awaken.

So they found viruses in the Siberian permafrost, the oldest of which is about 48,500 years old.

According to the research, the strains belonged to five virus families – pandoravirus, cedratvirus, megavirus and pacmanvirus, as well as a new strain of phytovirus.

Scientists have warned that viruses that remain infectious after prolonged freezing could pose a threat to humanity.
