The U.S. Supreme Court restricted the unauthorized tracking of American phones almost five years ago, but the FBI has not previously reported making such purchases.
This question was asked by Democratic Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon: “Does the FBI buy information about the geolocation of phones in the United States?” The FBI representative said their agency did not currently do this, but admitted to having done so in the past. .
He added that the bureau now relies on “litigation” to obtain location data provided directly by companies. He also did not specify what caused the FBI to stop the practice of purchasing such data, and whether the bureau would continue to do so.
