The company’s data can only be trusted as it has been using SSDs as boot drives for storage servers since 2018. As a result, its experts have determined that the failure rate of SSDs at the end of 2022 is 0.98%, which is lower than in 2021.
In contrast, HDDs have a 1.64% failure rate, which is about twice that of SSDs.
Separately, it is worth noting that many of the SSDs used by Backblaze are inexpensive models. That is why experts recommend that a higher failure rate among such drives should not be attributed to a higher price than an HDD.
